Kapa Haka
At Waitohu School we LOVE Kapa Haka. Year after year we see the joy, hard work, skill, collaboration, friendships, pride and aroha that our students, staff and whānau experience, through kapa haka.
We are very fortunate to have Matua Kahura Cameron as our kapa haka tutor. Kahura is an expert in fostering a space for students where they find a love for, skill in and wonderful artistic expression through kapa haka. Kahura has gifted hundreds of Waitohu tamariki through his talent in, and commitment to te ao Māori, expressed through kapa haka.
At Waitohu School we have a senior kapa haka rōpu and a junior kapa haka rōpu.
In Term 1 of each year all senior syndicate students participate in senior kapa haka. This is led by Matua Kahura Cameron and supported by Whaea Natalie Hough. Toward the end of the Term 1 students are able to choose if they would like to continue for the year, culminating in performing at our Ōtaki-Kāpiti Kapa Haka Festival and our Waitohu School end of year celebration assemblies. Every year, by choice, the greater majority of our senior syndicate students choose to continue learning kapa haka for the year. The senior kapa haka rōpu meets weekly.
We also have a junior syndicate kapa haka rōpu that is led by Whaea Natalie Hough. This meets fortnightly and all junior students participate. Some junior syndicate students are invited to also join our senior kapa haka rōpu in recognition of their desire and talent.
